Baseball and marketing have a lot in common.

Spring is here! While some people think of spring cleaning or blooming flowers, this time of year means one thing to me: baseball. An avid San Francisco Giants fan since elementary school, it’s not uncommon for me to have the game on in the background of whatever I’m doing this time of year. What does baseball have to do with marketing your business or social media management? A lot more than you may think.

How Baseball is Like Marketing Your Business

There are many lessons we can take from baseball. What should you think about when putting your marketing plan together? Here are three ways the sport can help you as a business owner:

  • Aim for hits, not home runs. Although hitting a home run is always fun, hitting the ball out of the park doesn’t guarantee a win. In the same way, a marketing plan focused on one big achievement is not likely to be successful. Sure, trying for editorial coverage in a major publication like O, The Oprah Magazine might be worth a shot, but putting all your eggs in that basket is not going to help you market your business in the long run. Just like baseball teams try to string hits together for runs, stringing together various tactics like blogging and social media management in addition to pitching your business to media outlets large and small is much more likely to get the word out about your company successfully.
  • Track your progress. Baseball is a game of statistics. In addition to keeping track of each and every strike the pitcher throws or a hitter’s batting average, an official gamekeeper tracks every single play, making note of errors, hits, defensive plays and much, much more. As a business owner, tracking your progress is vital to your marketing plan and social media management. At Three Girls Media we recommend installing Google Analytics on your site so you know how many unique visitors come to your site, how long they’re staying, which pages they’re checking out and more. Make sure you check out your Facebook analytics and any other stats you can get your hands on, too.
  • A win is a win. In baseball, it doesn’t matter how many great plays you make or hits you get. When it comes down to it, a win is a win, and the only way to win is to get more runs than the other team. In business it can be harder to define a win, so you need to take that step as a business owner. How will you determine if your marketing plan or social media management is successful? What are your goals? Make sure you pick something measurable, like a specific increase in your website’s unique visitors or a certain number of media placements.

Much like baseball, marketing can have its slower moments in addition to flurries of activity. As a business owner, it’s important to remember that games aren’t won in one inning, much like a marketing plan takes time to play out. Do you need help putting a strong game plan together?
