While printed newspapers and magazines may not be grazing everyone’s breakfast table these days, many businesses still look to these editorials for help with informing the public of their product or service. The problem is, getting a hold of a journalist (who is now covering many topics thanks to budget cuts) is practically impossible. Books

So how do you pitch a journalist and get the story?

1. Research. Any journalist knows that the key to a well-faceted story with plenty of credibility is on the fast-track to cover territory. Noting everything about a reporter including their beat or topic and style of writing will tailor your pitch to meet their needs, saving time both on their end and yours.

2. Get involved. Almost every journalist out there has a Twitter account, Facebook profile or blog that they actively participate on. When you see a post that’s interesting, comment or re-tweet it. Share your opinion, but do so in a professional and courteous manner. Keep this up and the reporter will start looking for you.

3. Keep it short. A pitch isn’t a story, that’s the reporter’s job. Be concise and give them the minimal information they need with enough juice to make it interesting. Reporters don’t have time to read about every product or service you offer, they just want to know if it’s story worthy.

4. Be responsive. If a reporter asks for something, get them the information they need as quickly as possible. Or, if it’s something you are unsure about, inform the reporter that you will speak with the correct people and get back to them as soon as possible. The last thing a reporter wants is you guessing about something. And always remember to thank them!
