Over the last couple of weeks, Stefanie’s written about public relations and marketing plan lessons you can learn from proposals and weddings; make sure you check out her articles and congratulate her on her recent engagement! But in the meantime, I thought it would be fun to jump off her posts and explain how your company’s public relations and marketing plan is like marriage. Granted, I’m still a bit of a marriage newbie, but with 5+ years under my belt, I think I have some insight to offer.

How Your Public Relations and Marketing Plan is Like Marriage

Here are four ways your company's public relations and marketing plan is like marriage.

Here are four ways your company’s public relations and marketing plan is like marriage.

Here are four ways your company’s public relations and marketing plan is like marriage.

  1. It takes time and work. Anyone that’s been married for a while will tell you it’s not always rainbows and puppy dogs tails. There are times you need to do things you don’t want to do. It takes time and work to learn and grow together just like it takes time and work to get the word out about your company. From carefully crafting copy on your website to building a social media following, it’s important to remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day – your public image won’t be either.
  2. Communication is vital. Is communication one of your strengths? Even as a professional communicator, sometimes I mess up and forget to communicate with my husband. Whether sharing big, exciting news (like being pregnant) or something a little more mundane (like what you need from the grocery store), communication with your spouse needs to be a two-way street. The same is true with your business. When you think about your public image, what sort of impression are you giving? Are you communicating with your followers and letting them know what’s going on? Are you listening to their response?
  3. Shake things up. In marriage, it’s easy to fall into a routine and get in a bit of rut. But it’s important to shake things up once in a while, like going out for a date and trying something new and exciting. The same is true for your business. Try shaking things up with your public image; get creative! This can be as simple as trying something new with your social media posts or going for a completely new public relations and marketing plan.
  4. Keep learning. People are always changing, which is why you need to keep dating your spouse and learning about them. In the same way, industries and markets are always changing. As a business owner, you always need to be learning so you know how to keep your public image relevant for your target audience.

I guess we’ll see what other insights I come up with in the years to come, but in the meantime, can you think of any public relations and marketing plan lessons you can learn from your marriage or relationships? How can you apply them to your public image? Share in the comments below!
