What can my shoes teach you?

What can my shoes teach you?

This week around the office we have been obsessing over each other’s shoe collections. We each have our favorites, some for comfort, some for the glam factor and others for the durability. You may be asking, “What the heck could shoes possibly have to do with marketing or social media,” right? Well, as I was going through my closet I realized that the way I work with social media is a lot like I look at my shoes! In today’s post I will share three tips for social media success based on my collection of stilettos and sling backs.

3 Social Media Tips You Can Learn from Shoes

1. It doesn’t matter how pretty the pair, if they don’t fit, they won’t work for you: Women in particular can confirm that shoe envy is a common occurrence. A pair of shoes that fits your best friend might not fit you, and while that doesn’t make you any less worthy of a good pair of shoes, it does mean that the particular option you have selected isn’t going to work. Consider your social media campaigns; what may be working for your competition might not work for you. The trick is finding that perfect fit, just like my favorite black suede peep toe wedges.

2. Sometimes less is more: Massive shoe collections aren’t for everyone. As I was clearing trash bags full of old boots, bright colored pumps and dirty tennis shoes, I realized that I had a billion pairs that I never wear! Those pairs are simply taking up space and serving no beneficial purpose. This concept is especially important when it comes to social media and fan engagement. Conversations will have a natural life cycle; if your content is dragging on a meaningless conversation with low engagement quality, it may be time to pull back.

3. “In style” doesn’t always mean appropriate: Shoes are sexy; there is no way around it. I know that I have a variety of shoes for every occasion, but understanding how each pair applies to various professional and social situations is a talent in and of itself. I see that black leather thigh high stilettos are a hot ticket item in the fashion world and, while they look stunning with a little black dress and blazer, I would never rock them at the office. The point here is that popular trends might not always be the type of content you would want to share with your audience. Social media trends like “LMFAO” or emoji’s might be cute between friends, but using them to tweet from your law firm’s Twitter account would send a conflicting message.

I clearly have a love for my shoe collection, but I have an even greater love for the art of social media. If you are looking for quality social media marketing from an exceptional team of professionals, please give us a call today!
