Creating a Facebook or Twitter account for your business goes way beyond posting a random thought you just had or seeing how everyone else spent their weekend. For many small businesses, creating social media accounts is replacing a traditional website. These

social media accounts include the standard information: menu options, business hours, the owner’s name and an address to put into your GPS. But unlike a traditional website, social media accounts allow customers to interact with you and your business. So much can happen so fast online, so it is important to stay on top of your accounts. Here are 3 things to keep in mind in order to build a strong social media presence:

3 Tips for a Strong Social Media Profile

  1. Make sure your customers know who you are and what you have.

Nothing is more frustrating or confusing to customers when they are on a business’ page and it says nothing about the business, what it does or what it has to offer. Be sure to have a completely filled out profile for your business utilizing all the features and components of the social media platform you are on. Conveniently, many social media sites now measure how complete your profile is, prompting you to get it to 100% complete. A fully developed profile will appeal to customers and allow them to see your business from their own home before they walk through your doors.

  1. Keep an eye on customer feedback and comments: positive and negative.

As wonderful as it is to get positive feedback from your followers, there are the occasional times that a negative comment is posted. While it is tempting to just ignore a comment of an unhappy customer, it’s important to treat them with respect and caring. Respond to their comment with an apology, and if the circumstance allows, see if there’s anything you can do to fix the situation or help the customer. If they feel as if you geuinelly care, they may just come back.  Responding to positive feedback is just as important. People love knowing that you responded to their comment and are interacting with them; so “like” a few comments and “re-tweet” or “favorite” posts to show that you appreciate their engagement.

  1. Seize the opportunity to engage.

Social media is meant to be used for communicating with other people online, and so should your page. If people feel connected to your business they will come back time and time again and maybe even suggest your business to their friends and family. Engaging with customers online is a great way to build a relationship with customers.  Adding in a fun post here and there or having a day of the week dedicated to a theme will encourgage people to come back at least once a week, if not every day to see what your page has new to say. One suggestion might be to create a hashtag (#) once a week that your business can post and encourage others to post along with the same theme. Building a rapport with customers online will translate to in person communication with customers walking through your doors.
