Before I became a publicist, I visited the worlds of Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest every so often. I never commented. If something was considered epic, I’d share it, but the event was rare. Now that I am fully enveloped in social media on a regular basis, I’ve come to realize the extreme importance of engagement.

Are your fans actively engaged?

Are your fans actively engaged?

Too many businesses get hung up on how many likes or followers they have. While this is an important part of social media success, it won’t mean much if none of those fans or followers are actually talking about or sharing the content you’ve put serious time into creating. So instead of focusing on the quantity, put more of an effort into the quality of content that you put out there to boost engagement and get people talking.

6 Content Ideas to Encourage Engagement on Social Media

1. Throwback Photos

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that everyone was a teenager at some point. Pull out the old yearbook photos, images of the bad fashion and hairstyles and maybe even a picture of what the business looked like ten years ago. Another fun idea is to post a photo of an employee and see if your fans can guess who it is!

2. Company Culture

Did your office just hold a Ping-Pong tournament? What about a costume contest? Give your fans an inside look about what wackiness goes on in the office and reveal your true company culture.

3. Quotes

A great way to boost engagement is to give your audience some inspiration. Try to post a quote a week, whether it be funny, insightful or relatable.

4. Infographics

I’ll admit, I’m biased toward infographics because these are my favorite content pieces out there. Infographics are a great way to show statistics or the process of how something works in a visual way. Create infographics that are specific to your company or industry to give fans an inside look at how it’s all possible.

5. Videos

Videos in themselves are engaging and they fit well on all social media channels. Add hashtags where appropriate and have fun with it. Videos that are strictly serious won’t get a lot of talk going.

6. Tips, Tricks and Fun Facts

These bite-sized delights are easy to share and can be extremely helpful as well. Use these sparingly and only if it’s something truly unique.
