It’s the middle of summer, the sun is still hot, popsicles are still the best treat around and you’ve still got at least one full month to plan the most epic road trip of all time. But what is that you’re starting to see on your TV? Back to school (BTS) commercials.  It’s still August and you may have already started to see them in July. To most kids, these commercials are a bummer and an annoying reminder that they’ll have to go back to school, get homework and study. But to a small business owner, these ads are a great example of marketing that should be mimicked in your own campaign efforts.

3 Marketing Lessons Learned from Back to School Commercials

1. Start Early

Now, July does seem to be on the early side of promoting the newest and coolest BTS clothes for kids. It seems odd to promote new backpacks the same month that Independence Day is celebrated, but it still happens regardless. The benefit of starting your campaign on the early side, is that you embed your business and product into the brain of your customers. You may not expect them to start buying right away, but having a constant reminder that your business is the one to go to will stick with them when it is time to buy.

2. Display what’s New

Of course the point of BTS ads is to get consumers to shop in the advertiser’s  stores alone, but it is also a time to shine on what you have to offer. With so much time and money spent on clothes and supplies, parents and kids want cool new stuff, not stuff they already have. Is there something within your company you can alter, change or spice up? To some people, jeans are jeans, but when the trend is right, most people will pay more for a pair that already has holes, patches and is shredding on the bottom.

3. Stand out From the Crowd

The closer we get to the fall the more advertisements will air. More and more stores will promote their products and that they have the best sales of anyone. Having killer deals won’t be the only factor in getting customers into your store, you have to be creative with your ads. While celebrity endorsements may be out of your budget, you can always get creative with your campaign. Make a display of what you have with catchy slogans, jingles or statements. The more you’re on the minds of the consumers, the better time you’ll have getting them to come in your door.

Back to school is not only a busy time for both parents and students, it is also a learning opportunity to see how big businesses market their products. These are just 3 lessons you can learn from BTS marketing campaigns; what else have you learned from these commercials?
