How do you “Shake it Off?”

How do you “Shake it Off?”

If you haven’t heard, Taylor Swift released her new album, 1989, this Monday. You may or may not like her, but chances are you’ve seen her on a talk show or at least heard her single, “Shake If Off.” While not a particularly deep song, this song proves to be an anthem for young fans who are letting go of the haters and negativity. Whether you’re 15 years old or have 15 years in the business, you may have experienced your share of hard times and bullies. Let’s take a second and learn a few lessons from Ms. Swift’s lyrics.

3 Lessons From Shake It Off

  1. “Can’t stop, won’t stop moving”

Not everyone is going to like what you do. We’ve learned this from an early age, but sometimes it is hard to remember when it seems like everyone is going against you. Don’t let that stop you from doing your work. Focus on the success you’ve had with your audience and work for them. These are the top 10 most hated companies in the United States, yet they are also some of the most famous and profitable ones. Learn to grow and rise amidst controversy.

  1. “I go on too many dates/But I can’t make them stay/At least that’s what people say”

At the age of 25, T. Swift has become notorious for her dating and love life. This aspect of her life has almost overshadowed her success and place on the charts. Instead of hiding from the comments, she decided to embrace them and face them head on using satire. There are two paths that can be taken: apologizing or acknowledging and moving on. While both are necessary when dealing with the public, her approach is an attempt to take back control and be in charge of her own image.

  1. “Shake it off”

Taylor Swift sings this constantly throughout the song, but you should hear it again: “Shake it off.” Not letting negativity and criticism weigh you down and throw you off is one of the most important things you can do for your business. Whether it is Internet trolls or unhappy customers, engaging in a never ending back and forth will only hurt your brand’s image. Of course, it is vital to promptly and courteously respond to honest customer comments and concerns, but you don’t have to engage in anything untoward.

Lessons can be learned from just about anywhere, even a Taylor Swift song. How you handle negativity can affect the future of your business and brand. Have you ever learned business lessons from songs off the radio? Share with us in the comments!
