I am so excited for the holidays! I love the food, the music, the weather…of course I also really enjoy traveling home to see my family, too. As I get ready to travel south to see them in a few weeks, I started thinking about public relations lessons I’ve learned from them.

3 Public Relations Lessons From My Family

Me with my family (I’m the youngest).

1. From My Dad: Do your homework.

Growing up with my dad, I learned that if I wanted to ask him for something out of the ordinary, such as a trip to Disneyland, I needed to do my homework so I could answer anything he asked: how much the hotel would cost, how I’d handle potential scheduling conflicts, how I’d get there, etc. The same is true with public relations. You need to do your homework before you approach a journalist. In addition to making sure they’re the best contact to reach out to, it’s important to anticipate anything they might ask for, such as high-resolution images or product samples.

2. From My Mom: Listen and help.

My mom is a great listener! It’s easy to tell she’s paying attention when you have a problem when she asks relevant questions and starts trying to help you come up with a realistic solution. This should be your approach with public relations, too. Really listen to what the journalist is asking for and do everything in your power to help.

3. From My Brother: Keep your integrity.

My brother is very honest. If he needs to tell you something, he will tactfully and compassionately say what you need to hear. Keeping your integrity is extremely important when it comes to public relations, too. It’s much better to carefully tell a hard truth than to get caught in a lie. Make honesty your policy whether you’re dealing with your customers or the media.
