Social media lessons from the Golden Globes

Social media lessons from the Golden Globes

Last Sunday the 72nd annual Golden Globes took place in Beverly Hills, California and were packed with celebrities and glamour. Third time hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler started off the show with a monologue with one-liners as sharp as a tack. While watching the awards ceremony, I found these three lessons in social media from the comedy duo.

3 Social Media lessons from the Golden Globes

  1. Know Your Audience

When writing content for social media it is crucial to know who your audience is. Even the greatest of posts will be for not if shared with the wrong group. Like Tina and Amy who crafted jokes specifically for those in attendance at the ceremony, they made sure to know who they were talking to and about.

  1. Relevant Material

Many of the jokes and comments made at the show were about topics that were recent and relevant. Many jabs were made about George Clooney and his wedding, as well as more serious topics about the tragedies occurring in Paris. How interesting is it to read or hear about old information? If your company’s content is out of date or has expired, people will lose interest in your blog and social media sites, and are less likely to be reoccurring viewers.

  1. Make things Interesting

Even though Benedict Cumberbatch was scheduled as a presenter, his involvement was out of the ordinary. Hosts Tina and Amy asked the audience if anyone wanted to present with Jennifer Aniston and picked him out of the crowd as a surprise. While this is a small gesture, it did add an element of fun and humor to the show. If your posts are always just a link to an article or a news update about your company, people can get bored. Incorporating visuals like pictures, infographics, memes and videos add creativity and color to your content which can help increase user interaction.

While not everyone can be as funny as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, your business can benefit from their comedy instincts and utilize these three social media lessons for content. Did you watch the Golden Globes? Share any other social media lessons that you learned from the ceremony!
