- Beginning a Tweet with “@”
It is instinctive to begin a conversation or reply by addressing the person by name:
“@KatyPerry is going to kill it at the #SuperBowl. #HalfTime #GoPats” By including the subjects handle first, Twitter believes this is a private conversation and it takes away from the social aspect of the site. Input a period “.” at the beginning of the post .@KatyPerry to make the tweet visible to everyone.
- Not Using Pictures and Videos
Whether you plan on creating your own videos or infographics or sharing them from YouTube and Pinterest, customer engagement increases with the use of pictures. On Facebook alone, visual content receives 37% more attention than words by themselves.
- Spreading Yourself Too Thin
There is an appeal to being on every single social media platform that exists and then signing up for new ones as they are created. Just because there are a variety of sites doesn’t mean you need to be on them all. Social media marketing campaigns and efforts become weakened if you are trying to be everything everywhere. Start with Facebook and then branch out after doing research to see which platforms are right for your business.
- Excessive and Irrelevant Hashtags
Don’t abuse hashtags. So often on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, every other word has a hashtag attached to it. Over doing hashtags adds nothing to the post and makes it harder to read than not having them at all. Be selective when including hashtags and make sure they aren’t obscure. Doing a simple search on the site you’re using can help you see if that topic is trending, relevant and what other people are saying about it.
