I recently started watching the TV show ‘New Girl,’ and after enjoying nearly every season on Netflix, I found a few PR lessons I can apply to future public relations work. The show follows the adventures of Jess, a young schoolteacher who was recently dumped and moves into a loft with 3 male roommates. It’s a fun sitcom that teaches about friendship, life and surprisingly, public relations. Here are 3 PR lessons from ‘New Girl.’

- Use Available Tools
One of the roommates in the show, Nick, is known for his frugal ways and ingenuity to fix problems in the loft. The others appreciate the help, but make fun of him for “Nick-fixing” things instead of “real-fixing” them. We should all “Nick-fix” our PR situations because when you challenge yourself to solve a problem using minimal resources, sometimes that’s when the most creative ideas are found.
- Relate to People on a Human Level
Even though the roommates were housing an extra person in the loft against management approval, Jess’ kind demeanor and smooth talking convinced her building manager to let all the friends stay. She accomplished this by relating to and getting to know him as a person before asking for his approval. Use this as one of your PR lessons; help leverage your relationships and get to know people in a very real way.
- Be Your (However Quirky) Self
Jess is extremely unique and frequently enjoys entertainment that her roommates find annoying. However, they always end up loving and supporting her when she needs it most. Jess’ refusal to change her behavior to fit traditional stereotypes is charming and infectious. Use this as one of your PR lessons to apply to your next campaign.
