This past weekend I had the chance to see one of my favorite musicals live: Wicked! Of course, this got me thinking about the public relations lessons you can learn from this popular Broadway show.

Can you think of any additional public relations lessons from Wicked?

1. Use a new angle; be creative! If you aren’t familiar with Wicked, it provides a different twist on the classic Wizard of Oz story. Instead of telling the story of Dorothy and her trip to Oz, it’s about two girls that become friends and, eventually, transform into the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. Wicked gives a classic story new life by approaching it with a fresh, creative angle. As you approach your public relations plan, think about different angles you can use to position your business in a fresh new way.

2. Wow your audience. Wicked features fantastic music, thrilling drama and memorable characters. Make your business memorable by wowing everyone you come into contact with. Provide fantastic customer service. Send out hand-written thank you notes. Anticipate clients’ and journalists’ needs with a simple, yet thorough, website. A fresh, creative angle can fall into this category as well!

3. Repeat your message. If you listen to Wicked’s soundtrack, you’ll hear a few recurring themes and refrains throughout the show. What’s your key message? Make sure your public relations strategy repeats it in various different ways as well.
