What social media lessons can you learn from a viral story?

One of the most popular stories of the past week was “Bachelor Party for One.”  Did you see it? It was on almost every news site, examining the sad tale of Robert Chernow who was the only invitee able to attend the bachelor party of his friend, even the bachelor couldn’t make it. This story went viral! Which got me thinking, what social media lessons can we learn from this cultural focal point? Here are three takeaways I found from the piece:

3 Social Media Takeaways from “Bachelor Party for One”

  1. Use a Hashtag

In every picture he posted on Instagram of his singular journey, he used the hashtag #ChicagoForOne. Even if you weren’t looking on his account, you could see updates on his time in the Windy City by searching on Instagram with the hashtag. Using a hashtag on social media, preferably the same one in every post, allows for new and existing customers to see you on social media. Make your business searchable and findable.

  1. Cross Promote

In one of his updates he showed a posting he submitted on Tinder, looking for a friend to explore the city with. While this adventure didn’t work out as he intended, cross-promoting your work is essential for visibility. Use social media as a platform to share your blog content and spread the word of your website. You can use the same link or image on the different sites, just add variety to the lead-in text of your post.

  1. Use Images

This story would be nothing without images. How interesting would his adventure be to readers if it was just text updates? We really got a sense of how “lonely” his trip was by seeing him at a Chicago Bears game and restaurants alone. Any types of images are sometimes better than no images. Find memes, infographics or take pictures yourself that best represent your brand, company and content.

Keep your eye out for stories that have taken over the Internet; they went viral for a reason. Use hashtags, cross promote and use images to be appealing to readers. What other takeaways can you learn from “Bachelor Party for One?”
