How do you define public relations?

As technology continues to evolve, and the field of public relations along with it, this question keeps coming up: “What is PR?

PR Newswire recently took on the task of redefining public relations. They asked their followers to fill in the blank, “PR is now _____,” and compiled answers into the infographic below.

Here are a few trends they observed:

  • Public relations is now digitally and socially driven.
  • PR has moved into the marketing spectrum.
  • Public relations is more proactive and transparent than ever before.
  • PR is still about relationships, although, “There’s a new emphasis on the importance of interaction, conversation and conversion.”
  • Public relations continues to be in a state of flux, evolving with technology and social culture.

How do I define public relations?

My definition is, “PR is about using communication skills to build relationships with a goal of increasing a brand’s awareness and name recognition.”

The truth is, the core of what public relations is hasn’t changed; the methods of achieving the same goals have. What used to be an industry built on press releases and phone calls has morphed into one that utilizes email, social media, blogging, etc. to communicate their news with the public. Now, however, a major difference is that companies can share their message with the public directly in addition to through editorial stories in the media. Both direct and indirect communication with a brand’s target audience is important, so it’s essential your business’ strategy includes a media relations component in addition to social media, blogging and e-newsletters.
