Here are 4 social media marketing lessons gleaned from a 2-year-old.

What can a 2-and-a-half-year-old teach you about social media marketing? A lot, actually. As I was thinking about advice for managing Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or LinkedIn, my daughter kept coming to mind. Sometimes approaching social media marketing with the freshness of a child can give your campaign new life. Here are 4 nuggets of advice gleaned from my daughter:

1. Move on after mistakes. My daughter is getting pretty good at her colors, counting and naming animals, but it’s not uncommon for her to forget the number 3 or accidentally call a parrot an “owl.” Although she’s close, as her mother I want her to get it right, so I kindly correct her and she moves on; she doesn’t worry about making mistakes here and there. If you find yourself making a mistake, don’t let it paralyze you. Apologize and move on, thinking about how you can prevent the misstep from happening in the future.

2. If it works, do it again. Little kids are very repetitive; it helps them learn. If they figure something new out, they want to do it over and over again to reinforce the new skill. If you notice a certain update you posted was popular, repeat the type of update again. Of course you still want to provide variety in your posts, but mix in that style of update more frequently.

3. Keep looking around. Observation is a fantastic way to learn. When my daughter sees me do something or hears me say something, she repeats it. When we’re at a restaurant or the store and she sees older kids, she watches them, sometimes repeating their behavior. As you approach social media marketing, keep learning! Watch what other brands are doing and think about ways you can transform what they’re doing into something that fits your company. Read helpful blogs about tips to improve your social media marketing. Never stop striving to be better.

4. Have fun. If my daughter doesn’t think something will be fun, she doesn’t want to do it. Of course, as adults, we know sometimes we need to do things we don’t want to do, but if you’re not having fun with your social media marketing than your followers won’t have fun either. Find humorous memes that have to do with your industry or share a fascinating article. Would you enjoy what you’re posting? If not, it might be time to re-think your content.

Moving on after mistakes, repeating what works, constantly learning and having fun are all important to a successful social media marketing strategy. Do you have kids? What additional insight have you gleaned from them? Share in the comments below!
