What social media lessons can we learn from Britney Spears?

With her longstanding conservatorship still in place, Britney Spears has taken a unique approach to announcing her freedom to express herself using social media. While her handlers might monitor her interviews, performances and other professional work, the Queen of Pop has free reign of her social media accounts that have millions of followers, where we get a glimpse of classic Britney. There’s lessons to be learned from the Southern Belle turned America’s Sweetheart who captured our hearts sixteen years ago when she debuted her hit song, “Baby One More Time.”

Social Media Lessons from Britney Spears

  1. Be Unique: Part of what makes Britney’s Instagram feed so captivating is the unique photos and videos her followers can expect from the singer. While Beyoncé, a fellow icon on social media, has come under fire for her unique social media pictures being allegedly photoshopped, Britney keeps her feed filled with images of her working, playing with her kids and being downright silly.
  2. Be Authentic: Although the conservatorship keeps much of Britney’s life under the control of her father, her social media accounts provide a refreshing glimpse into her life as a “regular” person. When she isn’t performing sold out shows in Vegas, fans know that Britney is at home being a normal mom to her adorable sons or hanging out with a few of her close friends. Authenticity in content means authentic relationships with your target audience.
  3. Be Consistent: Updating social media accounts on a regular basis is vital for optimum fan engagement. Take notes from Britney, who updates several times a week, and sometimes even multiple times a day. By keeping your followers involved in day to day activities, you continue to build your brand by creating a relationship with your social media fans.
