AI search SEO is critical for businesses in 2026
AI search SEO is the conversation I’m having with almost every client this fall, and for good reason. When someone asks ChatGPT for the best bakery in Massachusetts or asks Google to recommend a financial advisor near Olympia, the answer increasingly comes back as a tidy paragraph with a few business names. If your business is one of those names, you win the customer. If it isn’t, you may never know that customer existed.
I’ve been doing search engine optimization for more than two decades now. I remember when SEO meant stuffing keywords into a website footer (please don’t) and when a link from a local directory felt like winning the lottery. I’ve watched Google change its mind about what “good” looks like more times than I can count. So believe me when I say this shift is different. It’s also very good news for small businesses, and I’ll explain why.
In this post, I’ll walk you through what AI search actually is, what just changed inside ChatGPT and the practical steps you can take right now to get found in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity.
What Is AI Search SEO?
AI search SEO is the work of making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand, trust and recommend. You’ll also hear it called generative engine optimization (GEO) or answer engine optimization (AEO). Different acronyms, same goal.
Traditional SEO asks, “How do I rank on page one of Google?” AI search SEO adds a second question: “When an AI tool writes an answer, will it name my business?”
Both questions still matter. Lilach Bullock explains it nicely in her guide to AI SEO for small business: the first job is still ranking in regular Google search, because it isn’t going anywhere, and the second job is becoming the kind of source AI engines quote. I agree completely. Think of it as adding a new floor to the house, not tearing the house down.
Why AI Search Is Leveling The Playing Field
Here’s the part that genuinely excites me about our small business clients.
For years, big brands had the edge in search because they had bigger budgets, more backlinks and entire departments devoted to content. AI tools don’t care nearly as much about who spent the most. They care about who answered the question best.
When an AI tool builds an answer, it looks for content that is clear, specific, well organized and written by someone who clearly knows what they’re talking about. A local plumber who explains exactly what to do when a pipe bursts at 2 a.m. can beat a national chain with a generic service page. A boutique bakery that describes its ingredients, its process and its story in plain language can show up ahead of a franchise.
That’s why I tell clients that AI search SEO rewards expertise over budget. If you know your business inside and out (and you do), you already have the most important ingredient.
The Fresh News: ChatGPT Changed How It Picks Sources
If you needed proof that this landscape moves fast, here it is.
In August, something shifted inside ChatGPT Search. Reddit had been one of the most cited websites in ChatGPT answers for about two years. Then, within roughly a week, its share of citations dropped from about 3.8 percent to around half a percent. That’s a fall of roughly 86 percent, according to tracking data from Promptwatch reported by Search Engine Land.
What happened? The timing lines up with a change in how ChatGPT runs its searches. Instead of scanning the open web to see what turns up, it appears to be going directly to specific, known websites. OpenAI didn’t announce anything, and the tracking firm says the cause is still provisional. Bernie Fussenegger at B2The7 summed up the real lesson well in his weekly marketing trends roundup: the question is no longer only how to get mentioned on Reddit, but whether AI tools know your website well enough to go straight to it.
What does this mean for you? Three things.
- Don’t build your visibility on someone else’s platform. Plenty of marketers spent the last two years telling businesses to post on Reddit so ChatGPT would notice them. That advice aged overnight. Your own website is the one piece of digital real estate you truly control.
- Become a known, trusted brand. AI tools are clearly leaning toward sources they already recognize. Consistency across your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social media helps them recognize you.
- Expect more changes. Citation patterns can swing hard in days with no warning. Businesses that stay visible have a solid foundation, not those chasing every shortcut.
How To Get Found In ChatGPT And AI Answers: 9 Steps That Work
Now for the practical part. These are the same AI search SEO strategies we use with our own SEO and blogging clients, and you can start on most of them this week.
1. Answer Real Questions In Plain Language
Start by listing the questions your customers actually ask you. Not the questions you wish they asked. The real ones. “How much does it cost?” “How long does it take?” “Do you work with businesses outside Washington?” “What’s the difference between this option and that one?”
Then answer them clearly and directly on your website. AI tools are built to answer questions, so the businesses that answer questions well get quoted. Our own frequently asked questions page is a good example of this approach in action.
2. Put The Answer First
This one is simple but powerful. Answer the main question in the first sentence or two of the page or section, then add the details. The Do It Together Marketing small business SEO checklist recommends direct-answer opening paragraphs for exactly this reason, since they serve both featured snippets and AI-generated answers.
Long, winding introductions used to keep readers on the page. Today they just bury your best content where AI tools may skip right past it.
3. Structure Your Content So Machines Can Read It
Clear headings, short paragraphs, bulleted lists and one topic per page make your content easier for people to skim and easier for AI tools to pull a clean answer from. Use H2 and H3 headings that read like the questions people actually search for. If a heading could stand on its own as a question typed into ChatGPT, you’re on the right track.
4. Show Your Real Expertise
Google has talked for years about E-E-A-T, which stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness. AI search leans on those same signals.
Add author bios to your blog posts. Share real examples from your work, with permission. Mention how long you’ve been in business, the credentials you hold and the awards you’ve earned. We wrote about the value of author bios and author pages in our post on SEO trends for your blogging strategy, and that advice matters even more now.
This is also where I’ll plug real human writing. At Three Girls Media, we never use AI as a substitute for skilled, creative writers, and there’s a practical reason for that beyond our values. Generic, robotic content is exactly what both readers and AI tools are learning to skip. Your unique experience is the one thing no competitor can copy. (If you’re curious why this matters so much, here’s why your business needs to blog in the first place.)
5. Get Specific About Where You Are And Who You Serve
AI tools combine location signals with their answers, so local details matter. Mention the cities, counties and neighborhoods you serve. Include real examples, general pricing ranges where it makes sense and real results.
A page that says “We serve the greater Olympia area, including Lacey, Tumwater and all of Thurston County” gives an AI tool something concrete to work with. A page that says “We serve clients everywhere” doesn’t.
6. Keep Your Business Information Consistent Everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, Apple Maps, social media profiles and industry directories. When AI tools see the same information in many trusted places, their confidence in your business goes up.
This is one of the very first things we check when we take on a new AI search SEO client, because inconsistent listings quietly undermine everything else you’re doing.
7. Add Schema Markup
Schema markup is a bit of behind-the-scenes code that tells search engines and AI tools exactly what your business is, where it’s located, what you offer and even what your FAQs say. Your visitors never see it, but machines read it like the label on a jar. Schema.org has the full vocabulary, and most WordPress SEO plugins (including Yoast) can handle the basics for you.
8. Make Sure Your Website Is Fast, Mobile-Friendly And Crawlable
None of the steps above help if AI tools can’t reach your content. Check that your site loads quickly, works well on phones and doesn’t accidentally block search engines in your robots.txt file. Google’s own guidance on AI features in Search makes clear that the same technical basics that help you rank in regular search are what make your pages eligible to appear in AI Overviews. If your website is several years old and struggling on these fronts, a professional website refresh may be well worth the investment.
9. Earn Mentions From Sources AI Already Trusts
AI tools notice who talks about you. Local news coverage, industry publications, podcast interviews, guest blog posts, award announcements, chamber of commerce listings and genuine customer reviews all add up. Think of this as modern public relations. We’ve been helping clients with this since 2005, and it’s never been more valuable than it is right now.
Don’t Forget Social Media
Social platforms are becoming search engines in their own right, and AI tools increasingly draw from them too. A consistent, helpful presence on the platforms where your customers spend their time reinforces who you are and what you’re known for. Your social posts are also a great way to send people (and AI crawlers) back to the in-depth answers on your website. If you need a hand there, our social media marketing services are our most requested service, and they work hand in hand with a strong AI search SEO strategy.
How To Check Whether AI Tools Know Your Business
Here’s a quick exercise I recommend to every business owner. Open ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity and Gemini and ask the kinds of questions your customers would ask. Try prompts like these:
- “Who is the best [your service] in [your city]?”
- “What should I look for when hiring a [your profession]?”
- “Tell me about [your business name].”
Notice whether your business shows up, what the AI says about you and which websites it cites. Write it down, then check every month or two again. If the information is wrong or missing, that’s your roadmap. If a competitor keeps showing up instead of you, look at their website and ask yourself what they explain more clearly than you do.
Keep in mind that AI answers vary from person to person and day to day, so look for patterns over time rather than reacting to one result.
Common AI Search SEO Mistakes To Avoid
As exciting as this shift is, I’m already seeing businesses make some costly mistakes.
- Publishing a flood of AI-generated content. More content isn’t better content. Thin, generic articles can hurt your credibility with readers and AI tools alike.
- Repeating the same keyword over and over. Keywords still matter, but covering a topic thoroughly and naturally matters more.
- Chasing one platform. The Reddit citation drop is a perfect example of why putting all your eggs in one basket is risky.
- Ignoring traditional SEO. Google search still drives enormous traffic. AI search SEO builds on a strong SEO foundation. It doesn’t replace it.
- Setting it and forgetting it. Your website is a living thing. Update your key pages, refresh older blog posts and keep your business information current.
Frequently Asked Questions About AI Search SEO
Is AI search SEO different from regular SEO?
Yes and no. Regular SEO focuses on ranking in search results, while AI search SEO focuses on being named and cited inside AI-generated answers. The good news is that most of the same practices help with both: clear content, real expertise, strong technical health and a consistent online presence.
Can a small business really get found in ChatGPT?
Absolutely. AI tools reward clarity, specificity and genuine expertise far more than advertising budgets. A small business that answers a specific question better than anyone else has a real shot at being the one ChatGPT recommends.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
It varies. Some businesses see changes within a few weeks of improving their content, while others take several months, especially if their website needs technical work first. Consistency is what wins over time.
Do I need to pay for special AI SEO tools?
Not necessarily. Tracking tools can help you monitor your visibility, but the heavy lifting is still great content, a healthy website and a consistent presence. Start with the basics before spending money on software.
The Bottom Line
AI search is changing how customers find businesses, and it’s changing fast. But the heart of it isn’t new at all. Be genuinely helpful. Be clear. Show people (and now machines) that you know your stuff. Those are the same principles that have guided our work at Three Girls Media for more than two decades.
