Three simple business blogging tips to keep in mind when writing for your target audience.

Writing for your business is much different from writing on your personal blog. Depending on the nature of the business and it’s target audience, business blogs can vary widely in style and substance. The 75 Best Business Blogs of 2009 is a great place to look for some great examples of business blogs or if you are looking to be inspired to write your own. Here are some three simple blogging tips.

There are dozens of blogging tips and tricks online, but we’ve narrowed it down to three basic blogging tips to apply to your business’ blogs.

Blogging Tips for Business #1 – Learn Your Target Audience

Keep your reader in mind from the moment you decide to pick a topic. Is it something your target audience would be interested in? Target Audience says, “The goal is to present your content in such a way that you will attract visitors who are responsive to the message you are trying to communicate.” Think of it this way, if you were in your target audience’s shoes, would you be interested?

Blogging Tips for Business #2 – Avoid Industry Lingo

It’s irritating to have to look up every other word when you’re reading a blog post. Unless your target audience is your fellow co-worker, leave words like planful (careful planning) and alignment (agreement) in the conference room. It’s hard to always stay away from slang or industry terminology, but unless your readers are as knowledgeable as you on the subject, write in layman’s terms. Check out A journalist’s guide to PR lingo and erase any doubts!

Blogging Tips for Business #3 – Proofread, Proofread, Proofread

The most critical part of writing is proofreading. Punctuation is the difference between “let’s eat grandma” and “let’s eat, grandma.” Do not rely on your laptop’s spell check to catch mistakes. The worst ones are the ones that can’t be underlined in red, like the difference between ‘to’ and ‘two’ or ‘there’ and ‘their.’ However, there are always the outrageous mistakes that make you take a second look and wonder. Check out 10 signs that desperately need to be proofread.

Remember, start by understanding your target audience. If you write compelling content that’s targeted towards them, before you know it, you’ll find your readership growing. Do you have any blogging tips you can’t live without? We want to know! Share them in the comments below.
