The New Way People Can Use Twitter

Twitter is one of the most popular social media sites with the number of users surpassing 100 million in the U.S. alone. This real-time information network allows its users to interact with the world in 140-character tweets, and now allows users to stream 6-second video clips with their introduction of Vine. Vine, the creator of these short video sequences, has teamed up with Twitter to give Twitter-users a whole new experience.

Thursday’s launch of Twitter’s Vine app at the Apple Store now has users capturing moments with the touch of their finger. The program is designed to record as soon as the user presses their finger to the screen, and stops as soon as the finger is removed. There is no way for videos to be edited once they are complete, but videos do not have to be made in one 6-second take. They can be more brief moments that Vine’s program will link together until the 6-second time limit has been reached. All videos must be between 3-6 seconds.

What This Means for Social Media

Is 6-seconds enough time to share anything? Will these videos really be a success – if they can be called videos at all? It is difficult to say if Vine and Twitter will be as successful as Instagram and Facebook, but only time will tell. The promotion that Twitter brings to Vine will be the deciding factor.

However, the incorporation of Vine to Twitter has enough good things going for it that it might be a hit no matter what. The clips that Vine has created are, in a way, the children of animated GIFs (or GIF pictures connected to make a “moving” image). This rebirth can attract a whole new audience to the already growing Twitter movement. It challenges Facebook and other social media’s video-making programs, spurring competition. It allows users to get creative in new ways, and share moments of their life. These benefits show Vine isn’t going to be ignored. In fact, it might just be the best new thing.
