Is your social media marketing plan ready for 2014? The new vocabulary that graced the world of social media in 2013 might not have been what we were expecting, but it definitely opened the business world for new opportunities to expand their reach. While I don’t expect you to start twerking across your social media platforms anytime soon, I do recommend implementing a few of these new words into your social media marketing plan in 2014.

Use the selfie to your advantage in 2014

Is your social media marketing plan selfie ready?

1. Selfie

If you’re not familiar with Oxford English Dictionary’s newest addition, a “selfie” is a self-portrait that people share across social media platforms. Try posting user-generated content such as selfies that also feature your product or your company to better connect with your audience.

2. YOLO

An acronym for the term “you only live once,” YOLO started appearing on shirts and Twitter feeds early in 2013 and the trend stuck. It’s now one of the most popular hashtags around! Use this and other popular hashtags on social media platforms to stay in the loop and join conversations.

3. Listicle

This new word floating around social media platforms is the combination of “list” and “article.” Instead of your average blog or extended informative post, a listicle is a shortened article consisted mainly of bullet points. Readers flock to social media to get their information fast; make sure you deliver.

4. FOMO

The “fear of missing out” acronym is a widespread phenomenon that one might not be living their life to the fullest potential. If you want your business to do well in 2014, don’t miss out on the feeds by having a bad social media marketing plan.

5. Cronut

Two of the best bread products (doughnut & croissant) have been combined to create the cronut and it’s delicious. Take the same approach with your social media marketing plan and mix things up; pair your best YouTube video with Instagram Direct and surprise your audience.

2014 is a great year to try new things and bend the rules a bit across social media platforms. What transformations will your social media marketing plan see this year?
