My daughter has been watching the movie Cars a lot lately. We watch it at least 3 times a week at my house. Given that Lightening McQueen and Mater grace our TV screen so often, it’s not surprising I recently noticed these 4 public relations tips based on the film.

4 Public Relations Tips from the Movie Cars

Don't miss these 4 public relations tips from the movie Cars.

Don’t miss these 4 public relations tips from the movie Cars.

1. It takes a village. As Lightening learns during the course of the movie, a community is stronger than an individual. Just like he needs a crew chief and pit crew, a public relations campaign is stronger with a team. Running a campaign with 2-3 people allows for you to divide the work, have additional minds brainstorming new ideas and someone to cover should vacation or sick time arise.

2. Listen! This is something Lightening has to learn to do. At the beginning of the movie, he thinks he knows it all and gets distracted daydreaming of his success when The King tries to offer him some advice. But once he starts listening, he actually becomes successful. Make sure you actively listen wherever you can: listen to ideas from other team members, pay attention to comments on your social media pages, respond to journalists quickly, etc.

3. Take the time to do it right. When Lightening needs to fix the main road in Radiator Springs, he tries to muscle through it for the sake of getting it done, and the results are terrible! But when he takes the time to do it right, the road is beautiful and everyone is thrilled. From your website and press kit to your blog and social media channels, it’s better to take a little bit of extra time to make sure everything representing your company is done correctly, than to do it as quickly as possible and need to do it again later.

4. Have fun with it. Mater knows how to have fun. He shares the thrill of tractor tipping with Lightening, he dreams of flying in a helicopter and throughout the movie he finds ways to have fun. Make sure you have fun with your public relations campaign, too! If you find it boring everyone else will, too. The more you enjoy what you’re doing, the more it will come across in your work.
