Do you need to get back in the public relations saddle?

As we approach the end of March, now is a great time to consider how this year’s public relations plan is going. Do you need to get back on track?

Last year I did a great job being active and eating healthier. I felt great and was motivated, until all of a sudden I wasn’t. Since then, I’ve struggled with refocusing and getting back into the great swing I had going. As I’ve worked on getting back into a healthier lifestyle this week, I’ve realized how many of those principles carry over into a public relations campaign that needs renewed focus.

3 Tips to Get Back in the Public Relations Saddle

1. Refresh your plan. In addition to remembering what worked well in the past, try adding something new that will breathe life into your public relations campaign. It doesn’t have to be huge, but something new and exciting can motivate you to stick with it! For example, if being active on Facebook has worked well for your business, consider investing in a few promoted posts this time around.

2. Set achievable goals. It’s hard to stick with something when you don’t see the results! I’ve started giving myself gold stars on the days I eat well and green stars on the days I workout. This gives me a smaller, more achievable goal to work towards each day. With your public relations campaign, look at smaller goals you can accomplish regularly so you can see the progress. For example, decide you’ll write 1 Facebook update a day, or commit to writing one blog post each week and follow through.

3. Have an accountability buddy. To help me stay motivated, I’ve arranged to go running with a friend once a week. Although your public relations activities may not be group activities, the principle still applies. Have someone holding you accountable to get certain activities done within a certain timeframe. This can be as simple as having a friend ask if you’ve researched that media outlet you want to pitch, or even having an employee remind you of an upcoming deadline you’ve set for yourself.

Do you need to get back into the public relations saddle? By refreshing your plan, setting achievable goals and having an accountability buddy, getting back on the marketing horse is very achievable!
