Is HARO part of your public relations strategy?

Is HARO part of your public relations strategy?

Do you want to see your company’s name in the media, but aren’t sure how to make it happen? The good news is there’s a fantastic FREE resource for you: Help A Reporter Out (HARO).

It’s a simple concept: Journalists post specific queries about articles, books or other projects they’re working on and you respond directly to them if you are a good source for their needs. From The New York Times, to ABC News, to HuffingtonPost.com and everyone in between, nearly 30,000 members of the media have quoted HARO sources in their stories.

This is one of the numerous resources we use all the time on behalf of our clients at Three Girls. Through HARO, we’ve secured placements for clients in outlets like the Daily Parent, LadyLux, multiple stories in Men’s Health and more.

How can you make HARO work for you?

Heroic Search recently shared an article that provides fantastic advice for pitching HARO. What’s worked well for the Three Girls team? It aligns very similarly:

1. Make sure the query is a good fit. Read the entire request to make sure it’s relevant to your expertise and look at the deadline to make sure you have enough time to respond.

2. Keep it short. This is one area where HARO pitches are no different from other types of media pitches. Make sure your email is clear, concise and easy-to-read. Remember, the recipient is receiving hundreds of replies to their query; you want to make it simple for them to digest your pitch.

3. Include helpful links. Instead of lengthening your pitch with too many details, share the most important facts and then link to your website or virtual press kit for additional information.

4. Stand out from the masses. HARO journalists receive hundreds of responses to every single query, so make your pitch as unique as possible. In addition to following all their directions, include relevant statistics and let your business’ personality shine through.

Have you ever used a resource like HARO to secure editorial media coverage? Make sure the query is a good fit, stand out from the masses, keep it short and include helpful links to increase your chances of seeing your name in the media!
