I recently saw the much-anticipated ‘Jurassic World’ movie and am so glad I did! In addition to providing laughs, a couple of tears and some great dinosaur action, the flick also packed some valuable advice for public relations. Here are 3 PR lessons communicators can take away from ‘Jurassic World.’

What does 'Jurassic World' have to do with public relations?

3 PR Lessons from ‘Jurassic World’

  1. Return to Your Roots

From the first opening score to the last scene of the film, I was reminiscing about the past. Not only was the idea that nature had perfected the dinosaur 65 million years ago uttered many times throughout the movie, but the film had some subtle (and not so subtle) throwbacks to earlier Jurassic Park installments. From a simple t-shirt with the original dinosaur logo to an appearance by everyone’s favorite beast, the T-Rex, ‘Jurassic World’ did a great job of meshing the old and the new. Remembering where you came from and knowing how to use that to entertain your audience is a great way to keep your history relevant, even decades later.

  1. Tell the Whole Truth

The characters in ‘Jurassic World’ struggled to tell the truth in the face of danger; the film’s storyline may as well have been a lesson in crisis communications. As soon as the dinosaur escaped, the park should have done what was necessary to keep the visitors safe and been honest with the severity of the situation. The creature’s creators also lacked honesty, by refusing to share the genetic makeup of the beast. Had they done so, they would have quickly learned that raptors may not have been the best weapons against it. Use this as one of your PR lessons and remember that the truth can be one the most powerful ways of communicating; your customers will be more likely to trust you.

  1. Relationships are Paramount

We’ve mentioned before how important relationships are in the world of public relations, but they also were the most important element of ‘Jurassic World.’ One of the best story lines in the film was the bond between Owen and his raptors. He taught them to listen to him, perform tricks and even earned the coveted Alpha male spot in their pack. This attention and care put into building and maintaining the relationship ended up saving the characters’ lives. PR pros should put the same level of thoughtfulness into their interactions.

Using the past to inform the present to make your audience feel involved, telling the whole truth and remembering that relationships take time and care to build are all PR lessons I learned from ‘Jurassic World.’ Have you seen the film? What others would you add?
