What is the point of social networking sites? So often we forget the key word, social, when referring to big names such as Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. Almost one-fifth of the world is strolling around on all major social networking sites, but only a portion of these that are businesses are actually engaging in a social conversation. People are no longer satisfied with fourth wall interaction; they want to be right in the mix with you and be recognized as such. So how do you make social media social again?
1. Make a list
There is no point is spending countless dollars on social networking sites if you have no idea who you are trying to reach. Who do you talk to? Who is interested in talking with you? Do some research and discover who your audience is. Not only will this save you money, it will get your product or services in the hands of people who will become loyal to your company.
2. Talk
But don’t talk like a robot or automatic voicemail machine. Social networking sites were created to stimulate conversation between two or more human beings. Create a persona that is both honest and intriguing. Put a person behind the face of a company. Do this by responding to comments, liking posts and starting discussions with people that regularly visit and participate on your site.
3. Listen!
Social networking sites are not your personal soap box or bullhorn. If all you can muster up is a “thank you” than that is an excellent place to start. You’d be surprised how far a thank you can go.
4. Know Your Target
Broadcasting an update across all social networking sites isn’t going to accomplish anything. Being human on social media means applying the pet peeves that you yourself have and steering your audience clear of any annoyances or spamming. “Instead, think of each update as a letter: not who it’s for and why,” says Jennifer Lumba.
