Here are 3 marketing lessons from Chicago Fire and Chicago PD.

I recently started watching a popular TV show called Chicago Fire and its spin-off show called Chicago PD. The first time I watched Chicago Fire and Chicago PD I realized that the characters in each drama have something in common with the team at Three Girls, as well as anyone else managing social media as part of their marketing strategy. In this blog post I will identify three lessons that can be learned from the Chicago PD or Chicago Fire drama series in relation to marketing, PR and social media campaigns.

Three Marketing Lessons from Chicago Fire and Chicago PD:

1. Always have a backup: In this week’s season finale of Chicago Fire, Battalion Chief Boden decided to have a last-minute wedding to his girlfriend Donna and asked one of his firefighters to secure the cathedral for his ceremony. When that situation fell through, the entire fire department came together to create a beautiful ceremony at firehouse 51. What this says in relation to public relations, marketing or social media is that every backup plan needs to have a backup plan. Keep in mind that every campaign is going to be different and for that reason you need to expect the unexpected.

2. Trust the people that you surround yourself with: It’s absolutely imperative to remember that the people you surround yourself with are the people who help determine your success as a professional. In Chicago Fire and Chicago PD, the professions are extremely high risk and stressful; without trust the fire department would not be able to fight fire and the police department would not be able to fight crime. While it’s true that as a publicist or a social media professional you won’t likely be coming in contact with a common criminal and you won’t be fighting fire, it’s important to keep mind that your business is your livelihood and is therefore a large part of your world and needs protecting. Be sure to surround that business with individuals you trust.

3. Recognize both mistakes and victories: Acknowledging both strengths and weaknesses is something that may seem like it is common sense, but would you be surprised how many professionals dwell only on victories and never on failures. It is absolutely essential to give both wins and losses equal consideration as they can greatly impact the success of your future campaigns.
