This post shares PR lessons we can learn from a wedding. Last weekend, two of my best friends got married in a beautiful ceremony in Eastern Washington. I was thrilled to attend the festivities and while I enjoyed the sunshine and felt the love in the air, I also realized a few PR lessons from the event. Here are 3 tips I learned from my friends’ wedding that you can also apply to public relations.
3 PR Lessons from My Friends’ Wedding
- Plan Ahead and Create Buzz
Since the wedding wasn’t in my town, I had to plan ahead and make overnight accommodations for myself and for my dog while I was away. Having to think ahead about an event you aren’t planning is a good way to get in touch with the industry and any other happenings that may be relevant to your business. If you realize there’s a trend or a news story you could use to join the conversation, share it through your social media channels to create excitement.
- Communicate all the Details
Weddings are beautiful affairs that are well planned down to every last detail. That’s because the bride and groom spend months preparing for the event, similar to the work put into a public relations campaign. Since I was an attendee and not in the wedding party, I was glad the details like location, gift registry and dress code were communicated clearly via a website months in advance. As a business, if you experience a lot of questions from consumers, consider using a special Twitter account or hotline specifically for customer service and support.
- Show Support for Whom/What You Care About
I was at the wedding with loads of other guests to show our support and love for the bride and groom, and businesses can use this as one of their PR lessons to show they are behind issues they care about. Actions speak louder than words and being present to support charities and causes important to you can help form a meaningful connection with your fans.
Planning a campaign ahead of its beginning, communicating the details so everyone involved stays in the loop and supporting causes you care about are all great PR lessons I learned from attending a wedding. Stay tuned for Part 2 next time where I share some more tips!
