What social media lessons can you learn from “Bonnie and Clyde?”

Over the weekend I found myself re-watching one of my all-time favorite movies, “Bonnie and Clyde.” The 1967 film follows Bonnie Parker, Clyde Barrow and the rest of the Barrow Gang as they tear through multiple states robbing banks and gas stations, all while trying to outsmart the law. While watching the movie, I noticed that the infamous outlaws practiced many lessons we use in social media. Here are three lessons from Bonnie and Clyde.

3 Lessons in Social Media from Bonnie and Clyde

  1. Use Images

Taking and using pictures to send a message is something that Bonnie and Clyde did well. They sent photos to the Texas law enforcement of themselves posing with a Texas Ranger and took individual photos showing off their unique personalities. I wonder how many “likes” they would get on Facebook today?  Posting pictures of your products, as well as other images you find interesting is a great way to generate customer interaction and engagement. Memes, infographics and picture quotes are great examples of new and interesting images you may use.

  1. Use Catchy and Intriguing Words

One of the most famous phrases from the film is, “We rob banks.” This is said by both outlaws and is remembered by fans. Writing intriguing headlines is a necessity to catch the attention of your audience and to get them reading more. A perfect introduction may not happen on the first try, but keep practicing and trying to craft the perfect headline.

  1. Make a Lasting Impression

The legacy that has become of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow is legendary. Their story has been told and retold in history books, movies and television series’. People cannot get enough of these two (myself included). Create a blog and social media channels that your customers and fans return to. Write blog posts that provide helpful and useful tips and tricks to your line of work. It may seem like you’re spilling company secrets, but an audience responds to, and appreciates, when you give them the tools and information they can use on their own.

The story of 1920’s criminals has been made into the classic 1967 film, “Bonnie and Clyde.” If you decide to take your small business on the run and create a social media page, make sure to use images, catchy and intriguing words and create a lasting impression.
