You may be on the cutting edge of the social media phenomenon, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t have questions about Pinterest. Pinterest is a virtual bulletin board that allows you to organize and share all your favorite images on the web. So how do you know if you’re marketing your small business effectively on Pinterest? These three simple tips can help.

1. Consider your options.

According to an article on Entrepreneur.com, “not all marketing strategies for using Pinterest are as effective. Here are three ways companies use the social tool:

  • Mavens — Use images that are not their own and pin from elsewhere on the web.
  • Connectors — Don’t use their own materials but insist on re-pinning images from others on Pinterest.
  • Showcasers — Post their own images from their websites or blogs.”

Decide what kind of Pinner you want to be. “Mavens” tend to receive the most clicks and re-pins and the best overall results, while the “showcasers” received the fewest, according to a June study conducted by Pinsights, a Pinterest analytics provider. Try to be a Maven to get the best marketing results from your time spent on Pinterest.

2. All roads should lead back to your small business’ website.

Just as all your small business’ social media marketing tools should correctly portray your company, your Pinterest boards should accurately reflect your small business’ external image. Make sure to include business and product descriptions as well as a list of key features and a link to your website. When you add a price tag and link to your descriptions the pin will automatically be added to the Pinterest “Gifts” page, a section of the site that allows users to easily navigate and find gifts grouped by price. An article on YoungEntrepreneur.com says, “Make your efforts a two-way street. Have a Pinterest social media button on your blog or website to make it easier for people to find you on Pinterest.”

3. Create conference boards.

Pinterest is a great tool to promote your small business’ conferences and events. For example, if you’re planning on attending a conference or tradeshow, blog about the event with the details including who, what, when, where and why, and pin that post. “Then take pictures at the event, and create a Pinterest board for them,” says Matthew E. May with OpenForum.com. “Invite others you meet to post to the board. When you’re back home, close the loop by blogging about what you did, who you met, and what you learned…then pin the blog.”
