What are incentive programs?
Too many companies are ignoring the fact that incentive programs are crucial to maintaining employees, especially millennials. Contrary to previous generations’ beliefs, the job itself is not enough motivation to keep an employee at the desk. Here are a couple of tips to help you get started in building a successful incentive program.
Never underestimate the power of verbal and public recognition.
Remember that gold star chart in your kindergarten classroom? The same principle applies to employees today, though probably with less stickers. Recognizing an employee publically and verbally will not only make your employee a star for the day or week in the books, it will build self-esteem and acknowledgement from their peers.
It doesn’t have to be expensive.
Incentive programs don’t need to be made of money. In a recent survey, the majority of employees stated that a day off or the ability to work from home a few hours a week would be an incredible incentive. If you want your employees sticking around the office, have a candy or doughnut buffet in the break room. Sweet treats are always a winner!
We’ve all got a little fight in us.
Holding a contest in the office can bring out a great fighting spirit in employees; but be sure to make the prize worth it! Remember that the prize doesn’t have to be extravagant – sometimes people just want to be called the winner. Use incentive programs based around contests for your all-star employees to push them further.
Incentive programs do not require big budgeting meetings or wasting of employees valuable time; they just have to be motivating and personal. Employees generally believe in a company and want to be part of making it better. Don’t take that chance away from them just because you didn’t motivate them enough.
