I think I’ve crossed over to the dark side. No, I haven’t taken up forces with the Emperor or Darth Vader. But I’ve become a coffee drinker. Despite living in the Pacific Northwest for 4 years, getting up at odd hours to go rowing and being a social butterfly, what finally did it was needing the boost of energy that comes with being a mother.

A Marketing Plan with Coffee??

Here are four ways your marketing plan is like a cup of coffee.

Here are four ways your marketing plan is like a cup of coffee.

Since this whole new world of coffee was recently opened to me, and because I like putting everything in my life through the public relations / social media marketing lens, I started thinking about similarities between a business owner’s marketing plan and this addictively wonderful substance.

  1. It’s like another language. This is probably why I avoided getting into coffee for so long. I’d look at a menu and have no idea what I was ordering. The same is true for any industry. For those of us in the marketing and public relations field, sometimes we forget that a small business owner doesn’t understand the jargon we’re using. At Three Girls we’re happy to explain what we’re talking about in common, everyday language, and we’re happy to teach you what the terms mean so you know what you’re talking about, too!
  2. Everyone has their drink. Mine is an iced vacce (I’m not sure how that part’s spelled) americano, no cream. How did I find out? I took some time to talk to a friend of mine that knows her coffee, and she helped me figure out what I like. How does this translate to marketing and PR? When you’re promoting your business, there are parts of it you’ll be drawn to more than others, such as networking events, writing blog posts, social media marketing or emailing reporters, and sometimes you’ll need an expert to help get you there. But once you find your PR drink, so to speak, embrace it and let your marketing plan play to your strengths. Then get help for the areas that aren’t your cup of tea.
  3. DIY vs hitting up your favorite barista. Sure, anyone can make their own cup of coffee. With all the coffee makers, espresso machines and creamers available to the consumer, chances are you can learn how to make your drink. But sometimes you just don’t have the time or you’d rather let someone else do it. The same is true for your marketing plan. Sure, you can create your own plan of action and follow through with things like social media marketing, but sometimes you just get too busy and need to visit your favorite marketing barista. The good news is Three Girls can help! From basic consultations to full public relations campaigns, we can create a plan of action specific to your needs with our a la carte PR menu.
  4. A little bit every day. Drinking one cup of coffee each day of the week is much better than downing seven cups all at once, right? The same is true for your marketing and public relations activities! Consistency is key, so try to carve out a little bit of time each day for writing blog posts, emailing reporters, working on your e-newsletter and social media marketing rather than forcing yourself to sit down for a huge PR session.
