What makes a memorable Facebook status? We have all enjoyed a few laughs over a comedic or inspirational Facebook status and we often don’t hesitate to share it with everyone we know. However, when it comes to a small business Facebook page, is hilarious always the appropriate route? Probably not. But there are different ways to make a Facebook status really stick with your audience as long as you keep in mind the key point: engagement. Here are five rules to consider when writing your next Facebook status update.

1. Short & Sweet

Just because you are allowed 5000 characters in a Facebook status update does not mean you should use all of them. According to a study by Buddy Media, a Facebook status with 80 characters or less receives 66% more engagement. Knock that character count to less than 40 and you’re looking at an 86% increase. 

2. Be Direct with Your Audience 

“Even though you are speaking to your entire network, only one person reads your words at a time,” Annette Bondarenko says. Edit your posts so that they are targeted specifically to a single person within your audience. When you ask a question, be direct, ask for an answer or tell them exactly what to do. Example, “Click like if you agree.” Another option: Go the fan favorite route and post a fill-in-the-blank status.

3. Use Variety

If your fans know what to expect each day then they will soon tire of your Facebook posts. Videos, links, images, polls, contests, articles and fill-in-the-blank status updates are all options to choose from when writing a post. Mix up the subject matter and stay relevant.

4. Timing is Everything

Posts written later in the week actually show an increase in engagement with weekend posts scoring the highest. Evenings are great too! According to this article, a Facebook status posted between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. has a 20% higher engagement rate.

5. Respond

If you’re not going to talk to your audience, they’re not going to talk to you. Make sure to respond to all comments within 24 hours and work to build those online relationships.
