It seems like everything these days has a hashtag attached to it. Public events have specific hashtags corresponding to their festivities and now more prevalently, television shows are using specific hashtags for viewers to interact with the program.  I, for one, have participated in hashtag events from television shows. Many programs have a very tiny graphic on the bottom of the screen to let people know which hashtag to use if they want to talk about the show online, while other shows encourage viewer interaction. Shows like The Mindy Project have a special hashtag, #MindyMixer, to use during the program with live tweeting from the cast. You can follow along to what the cast has to say about the show, as well as see what other viewers are saying. Also, Deadliest Catch has now started to put viewer and cast member tweets right on the screen during its original airing. While you or your company may not have the option of creating a popular TV show, you can take the benefits of using a hashtag.

How can this help your business with engagement and loyalty from followers?

2 Ways to Incorporate Hashtags into your Business’ Marketing Plan

  1. The opportunity to “trend” – specifically on Twitter.

When something is trending on Twitter, that means the topic or specific hashtag is being posted over and over again. This is a great way to see what people are saying about your product or company in an honest fashion. The more people use your hashtag or handle, the more eyes are put back on you. This word of mouth tactic is a great way to snow ball your company’s social media accounts and attract new audience members to your site and business.

  1. Deepen customer loyalty.

When people are using a hashtag you have created, they are invested in you. Not everything online is negative; you shouldn’t be afraid of allowing a conversation about your company to get started. Get a conversation going and let people know how you can help them and what you can do for them. The more people that are taking the time to talk about your company, like a TV show, the more they are likely to go back to it and tell their friends and family.

Creating a hashtag is a great way to connect with fans and customers alike. It will enable you to learn what they are saying about your business and deepen their loyalty to your brand. Getting started is as simple as creating a Twitter account and making your first post with a hashtag, then publicizing it on your website, in your other social media accounts, on your collateral and anywhere else it can be publicly displayed. Take a lesson from television and hashtag your business!
