Did you watch the 2015 Sugar Bowl? If you did, you not only saw Ohio State beat the University of Alabama, but you also saw Mayhem, the main character in Allstate Insurance’s TV commercials. To the rest of us, Mayhem is a hilarious nuisance who scratches your car or buckles in the roof of your house because snow can be heavy. But to Matt and Shannon, Mayhem was a burglar who sold everything in their house during a series of commercials. If you couldn’t get enough of the commercial series, here are three marketing tips you can use for your business from Allstate Insurance and Mayhem.
3 Marketing Tips from Mayhem
- Use a Real Life Example
The story around the Mayhem Sale came from Matt and Shannon Maskol’s real life events. Their home was broken into and robbed after they shared videos and pictures during their honeymoon. Using a real life example in your marketing connects people with your message and gets them involved more than a made up situation.
- Appeal to a Common Problem
Have you ever live Tweeted, Facebooked, Vined, or Instagramed your day letting everyone know where you are at all times? This is what a “social media savvy burglar” hopes for. The message behind the Mayhem Sale is to warn people about oversharing on social media when you are away from your house. Given that it’s how Matt and Shannon got their house broken into, it’s not uncommon. With the rise of social media related crimes, Allstate is appealing to anyone who posts online and making them think twice about what they post and when.
- Be Creative
Where’s the fun in simply telling people not to overshare on social media? By Allstate creating an ad series with a real website to sell belongings, they created a marketing campaign that has people talking about it and watching online. Videos and images have a higher interaction rate with audience members than words alone, so making a video campaign will have a higher impact than a written campaign.
The Mayhem Sale and Allstate Insurance commercials are fun to watch, but their message is real: don’t overshare online. Watch the commercial series to not only protect yourself, but to learn marketing tips from Mayhem. What other marketing tips can you give based on commercials you’ve seen? Share your comments below.
