On Wednesday, May 6th, I had the giddy joy of seeing the New Kids on the Block at the Tacoma Dome for The Main Event tour. Once I added my new program to my collection, I realized that this was my 5th time seeing them since they got back together in 2008. After watching them this most recent time, I discovered three social media lessons from The Main Event tour.
3 Social Media Lessons from NKOTB
- Repurpose Content
For the New Kids, many of their hits come from the late 1980’s to the early 1990’s. After performing hundreds of concerts over the past 20 plus years, it could get a little dull singing the same songs over and over again. During a portion of the show, many of their hit songs were sung to the melody of other songs and mixed seamlessly together. For your blogs and social media content, repurposing content is a great way to share the same content again, but with a fresh take.
- Go Behind the Scenes
One of the surprising highlights of the show was the “quick change cam.” During the live streaming, the members of the New Kids had fun messing with the crowd while switching outfits for the next set. This new element of the concert was a great addition because it added another layer of fun to the already exciting show. Consider creating Instagram or a Snapchat account to show the fun goings on of your work place. Your audience will appreciate seeing the fun side to your business and getting to know you and your company better.
- Engage with your Audience
As with most concerts I’ve been to, there is the normal break to show gratitude and thank the audience for being there. This time, the crowd got involved during a speech from Donnie Wahlberg. The Tacoma crowd took it upon themselves to start a screaming re-match for the Super Bowl. Making a point to let a band of Patriots fans let them know that the 12 Man is strong, Wahlberg played along right back. Try interacting with your fans by posting questions on your social media accounts and respond to their answers. Creating a dialog is a great way to turn customers into loyal patrons.
Social media lessons and New Kids on the Block? That’s my kind of learning. Repurpose your content, go behind the scenes and engage with your audience to create a social media campaign that will have a lasting impression.
