I’ve always enjoyed The Beatles. I was introduced to them when I was around 13 or 14, a time when I was overloaded with emotion. The Beatles had a cheerful sound I could play in the background that instantly refreshed my mood. It’s common knowledge that The Beatles changed our world with their music and philosophy, but they also had another talent: marketing.

The Beatles mastered the word-of-mouth strategy and gained popularity in the U.S. long before they even stepped foot on American soil. They achieved publicity many businesses can only dream of.

Is your social media marketing strategy as strong as The Beatles’? It can be with these three social media marketing lessons the Beatles left us.

  1. Clock in the time.

Believe it or not, you will not simply enter the social media marketing playground and gain instant success; you have to put in the hard time. Malcolm Gladwell calls it the 10,000-hour rule.

In four years, The Beatles performed 1,200 shows. That definitely meets the 10,000-hour mark. Take the same approach with your social media marketing strategy. Practice behind the scenes and out of the spotlight to really develop a strong brand, message and tone that can work its way up to the top.

  1. Create amazing content.

Content is king in social media

Creating quality content should be the main goal of your social media marketing strategy.

I’ve reiterated this lesson countless times, but it’s because it’s so important! The Beatles were not a one-hit wonder; in fact, 27 of their songs were No. 1 hits in the U.S. or the U.K. Your social media marketing strategy needs to include building strong content that you can release to your audience and attract them. As George Carlin said, “Content without strategy is just stuff.”

  1.  Use multiple formats.

In today’s online-only world, people have smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops and watches that provide instant information about almost anything, and also serve as      music players. The Beatles thrived in a time when these things didn’t exist, yet their music could be found anywhere in multiple formats, including television, live shows, movies and records. Create your social media marketing strategy with multiple channels where your audience can find you.
