When should you follow up with your sales and marketing leads? This is a common question we hear from business owners. Although every lead is different and requires a bit of subjectivity and common sense, here are some general guidelines to follow:

  1. After initial contact, follow up 2-3 days after you provide product samples, additional information about your services, a proposal, etc.
  2. If you don’t hear anything back, wait 1-2 weeks and then check in again.
  3. Wait another 3-4 weeks before sending out another round of follow-up.
  4. Check in with the sales or marketing lead 1-2 months later.
  5. Continue to follow up every couple of months.

What should you say when you follow up? Regardless of whether it’s a sales or marketing lead, make sure you provide something of value each time you check in. Tell them more about why your services are beneficial this time of the year, or why your product is of use to them or their audience. Your goal is to remind them why your organization is vital to them right now.

Practice what you’re going to say, or re-read your message multiple times to make sure it’s clear, concise and professional. If you can, have a friend or family member proofread the note for you or listen to what you’ll say and offer constructive criticism.
