Information is everywhere, from the labels on our cereal boxes to the Wikipedia page about quantum physics.  We’re constantly bombarded with facts and figures.  With so much material floating around it can be hard to sort through the noise.  Fortunately, someone got the bright idea to create an infographic.  These helpful little charts are a great resource for breaking down complex ideas into easy to understand nuggets.  However, all infographics are not created equally.  In this post we’ll take a look at what makes a good infographic.

A good infographic should be interesting and visually compelling

A good infographic should be interesting and visually compelling

Interesting Topics

The best infographics focus on overlooked pieces of data and present the information in a way that allows us to draw inferences and ask questions.  For example, we’ve likely all heard the debate about renewable energy, but this infographic dealing with wind power allows us to see things in a different light.

Well Researched

Great information doesn’t mean a whole lot if the material comes from unreliable sources.  The best infographics use solid research and make that data available through clickable links.  People want to know what they’re seeing and reading is accurate.  Providing links allows them to double check your facts and evaluate your findings for themselves.

Visually Appealing

Infographics are largely a visual medium.  Boring layout, harsh colors and unreadable text can ruin even the best of intentions.  The trick is to find a method of organization that works within your visual theme.  This infographic about Olympic Swimming separates information by topic and the visuals help orient you on the page.  My favorite is the use of lockers to talk about the different styles of swimsuits.  This works because it’s compelling and memorable.  I’ll remember these details because of the association between swimwear and lockers.

There are finer points to a great infographic but the best use these three principles to create a page that is engaging and educational.
