What can you learn from your wedding?

What can you learn from your wedding?

Over the Valentine’s Day holiday, my best friend got engaged. Since her proposal, I have become obsessed with all things related to being a blushing bride. I find myself perusing Pinterest at all hours of the day, searching The Knot for great reviews and watching endless marathons of Say Yes to The Dress, Four Weddings, and every wedding movie ever made. Now I know that this all just sounds like a girly rite of passage, but with the extensive planning that goes into making a wedding perfect and the unique process that is followed for each event, I began to wonder how the multi-billion dollar wedding industry could help better the social media, marketing or public relations efforts of a small business or brand.  In this blog post, we identify three positive take-away tips from planning a trip down the aisle.

Three Marketing Lessons Learned From Wedding Planning:

Organization is key: The second someone gets engaged, the first big wedding purchase is a fancy planner style notebook. This notebook is the place where Pinterest dreams become a reality and where all the specific intended wedding day moments are kept protected until the journey to the altar. Without a planner, a wedding could turn out like a disaster and your marketing campaign follows the same set of rules in this case. Try using free web tools and apps like calendars and spreadsheets to map out your campaign before and during the process; this extra step will save you many headaches down the road.

Understanding your audience will help develop your goals: Everyone has a different wedding style, but what each wedding has in common is a demographic. If a couple is catering to a more casual crowd, a five course plated meal wouldn’t be the best fit, and beer straight from the can wouldn’t appeal to a classier, more upscale guest list. The point here is that there is a time and place for everything, but planners need to decide what their own targets are in order to find success that is tailored to them. Be sure to know who your business or brand is marketing to and cater your content to their interests and needs.

Don’t neglect the details: I have been dreaming of my wedding since I was five years old and you better believe that I have thought of everything from napkin rings and escort cards to color palates and even the shade of my bobby pins. The attention to detail that is included in wedding planning is second to none and that attention is something that can and should be applied to small businesses or brands at all times. When creating and executing your own plans, don’t let small oversights ruin your vision and always keep your eye on the prize.

Whether you are planning your own wedding or have been married for 50 years, there is much to learn from the process and even more that can be applied to the successful practice of marketing and public relations.
