While I will admit that I wasn’t much of a Scrabble player when I was younger, I was definitely sucked into the smartphone app, Words with Friends, quite quickly. The colorful Scrabble copycat has stolen much of the attention I should be devoting elsewhere but I frankly justify the game by claiming that it expands my vocabulary. But what you may not know is that Words with Friends offers a variety of stellar marketing lessons that can be applied to today’s bustling business world. Keep reading to learn how to score big on the marketing Scrabble board.

Are you playing the board correctly?

Are you playing the board correctly?

1. Hit Shuffle

I have spent countless hours staring at a project from one angle and simply getting nowhere. That’s when you hit the shuffle button and look at things from a different perspective. Simply shaking things up can give your brain the nudge it needs to think outside of the box and be more observant of what is already available to you.

2. Play Big Points

Your typical Scrabble board is laced with Triple Word and Triple Letter spaces for you to earn big points very quickly. Take that same principle and apply it to your marketing strategy, AKA, play with your biggest assets. You have a 10-point Q in your back pocket just waiting to be used. If your strongest content is images, watch the board (time) and play accordingly.

3. Think Plural

I often miss a big scoring opportunity in Words with Friends when I start a new word off one letter instead of adding an “s” to an existing word and building a new word off of that, giving me double the points. The same applies to marketing. Be aware of trends and opportunities that will allow you to double your range and reach a larger audience. Give your two cents regarding the newest trends on Twitter or jump on the bandwagon and share a popular Facebook post.

Whether you are an old-school Scrabble devotee or get excited every time your phone dings letting you know it’s your move in Words with Friends, take into consideration these basic tactics next time you attack your marketing strategy; you might surprise your opponents.
