What has your vacation taught you?

What has your vacation taught you?

I am planning a vacation because I am cold. Growing up in Washington State, I am more than used to the crazy weather. One second it could be snowing, the next it is sunny and then a huge thunderstorm or monsoon could hit (all within five minutes), but this winter has been exceedingly difficult to manage. For that reason, I couldn’t be happier to say that I am preparing for a vacation to much warmer temperatures! In my own excitement and planning for my time away, I began to think about how all the time and effort spent on perfecting vacation plans could be equated into ideas for successfully mapping out your social media strategy success. In this blog post, I share three ideas derived from my own vacation planning that could make all the difference on your next social media or marketing campaign.

Three Social Media Strategy & Marketing Planning Ideas from Vacations:

1. You won’t be able to see everything, so make a list of your must-see attractions: I will be traveling to Los Angeles early next month and it is much like a second home to me.  While I want nothing more than the ability to stop at every hot spot, eat every favorite food and see every one of my dear friends, the reality has set in that I may not have the time to see and do it all. In your social media strategy and efforts, this equates to prioritization. Make a list of your main goals and tackle them one by one. Realize that growing your presence on Facebook through Facebook Ads, new groups, 12 updates a day and 4 contents all running at the same time might have an adverse spam like effect on your marketing efforts. Try tackling your goals for each platform in a manageable and realistic way.

2. Always over pack; it is better to be over prepared then under prepared: I am that guilty offender that brings an outfit for every scenario, and while I do get laughed at, I never have to buy new clothes while on vacation because I had an accident of some sort. This is a healthy mindset to have when dealing with social media or marketing campaigns. Facebook fans and Twitter followers can be unpredictable and you need to be prepared for the unexpected, such as negative feedback, spam or even competition. Being prepared for all scenarios will help you find success in the long term.

3. Know the rules before traveling: I grew up traveling and am no stranger to airports or TSA, but every airport is different and rules are constantly changing. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to pull things out of my carry-on or throw things away because I inadvertently broke the rules. When preparing for your next social media or marketing campaign, be mindful of the regulations set forth by your intended platform and follow those rules. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other various sites are not just for free reign; each will have strict rules that users must follow and breaking those rules may cause a hiccup in your campaign timeline and could alter the further success of your activity.
