It’s no secret that I enjoy watching TV during my down time; at the same time, I always find it interesting to see how a show pushes the envelope a bit – especially when it relates to marketing communications. For example, I find it fascinating how Agents of SHIELD fits within the Avengers’ universe, following the movies’ story lines while still telling their own story. What does this have to do with a marketing strategy or social media management? Keep reading to find out!

3 Marketing Strategy Tips from Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD

  1. Keep the big picture in mind. One of the interesting things about Agents of SHIELD is that the story takes place within the same universe and timeframe as the Avengers movies. When Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out in April, the show’s plot line had to intersect without spoiling the movie. With the big picture in mind, the show’s story arc followed the movie’s and referred to Captain America, but didn’t dwell on any specifics. When it comes to marketing communications, you need to look at your overall marketing strategy without getting caught up on the details, too. Instead of thinking about a Facebook update you plan to write, look at your overall social media management goals, timeline and how you plan to get there.
  2. …but make time for details too. Although most viewers watching Agents of SHIELD have seen all the Avengers movies, they need to explain specifics that come up just in case the audience doesn’t remember or missed one of the films. In your marketing communications, you also need to remind your followers of important details about your business. Review the important details over and over again, and let them know where they can find out more. From social media management to pitching, links are your friend!
  3. Dangle a carrot. This is something the show’s creator, Joss Whedon, is annoyingly good at. He sprinkles information here and there, never giving away too much at a time, but dangling the carrot just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. Although you might not have information as compelling as how Agent Coulson is alive, remember that less is more in all your marketing communications. For example, when it comes to social media management, shorter updates are actually more engaging, even on platforms that don’t limit your characters. Post with brevity, give your followers a taste and leave them wanting more.
