Over the weekend I had to surrender my computer to the repairman in my town to have him fix my damaged laptop. This was a difficult moment for me, considering the laptop is where I do all of my work and check on my social media accounts (I’m not a big fan of apps). Though I made it through the weekend, it became a real struggle when it was time to get back to work on Monday. Here are three lessons I discovered from life without a laptop that can be applied to your next social media marketing campaign.
3 Social Media Marketing Lessons from Life Without a Laptop
- Use Your Resources
Since I live a block away from the university I graduated from, I decided to head back to school and use their resources. I went to the library and used their computers to complete my work in the absence of my missed computer. The college had great tools for me to continue with my job, just as there are great tools and resources for social media campaigns. Here is a great list of free and paid programs that can help you keep track of and monitor your accounts.
- Think Ahead of Time
Since I wouldn’t have the luxury of hopping onto my computer to check emails or start a project whenever I pleased, I had to be strategic. The time I spent at the library needed to be effective and productive. This is when I sat down with my planner and mapped out everything I needed to do for the week and when things had to be done. Making an editorial calendar for your social media marketing campaign is a great strategy for plotting out what you want to write about and when you want to post it. This will help you stay on top of trends and not miss any important topics to post about.
- Plan Ahead
Along with writing the work that needed to be done in my planner, I also needed to think about my and the library’s schedules. What were their hours? What times did I need to be away from the library to be on conference calls? All of these factors were important to remember when managing my time. When it comes to your social media posts, if you find yourself short on time or unable to submit content everyday, consider using sites that help you plan ahead. Websites like Hootsuite and SproutSocial are great tools that allow you to schedule posts days, weeks and even months ahead of time.
While being without my laptop was not the end of my world, or even close to it, it was still a bit of a struggle to get used to. Like my situation, a social media marketing campaign can benefit from using your resources, thinking ahead of time and planning ahead. What else can you learn from life without a laptop?
